My client wanted to combine stunning scenery, amazing roads, staying at some unique hotels with fabulous Scottish food. This all added up to an exciting idea – a car rally in Scotland for close friends.’
Where to start?
A map, a big map of Scotland! I wanted to keep my clients away from the well trodden North 500 – fabulous but too busy and too long. Where I live in Perthshire, the heart of Scotland, seemed to be a great starting point.
From there, the route became quite clear. Head west to the coast of Scotland where the magnificent mountains give way to white sand beaches. But food and fun needed to be included as well as 5* hotels.
Road Trip Plan
Day 1 – Auchterarder to Inverlochy
The best way test the route was to drive it myself. On an stunningly beautiful day last April, I set off from Auchterarder heading west via Crieff and Crianlarich. My first stop, Isle of Eriska Hotel https://eriska-hotel.co.uk for a lunch of the freshest Scottish seafood looking out over the coast. From there I headed north, a great idea of a pop up whisky cocktail tasting on route, just to break the journey. Arriving at Inverlochy Castle Hotel https://inverlochycastlehotel.com in time for evening drinks and canapes followed by dinner in the Albert Roux restaurant.
Day 2 – Inverlochy to Torridon
The morning was as fabulous as the day before, the views along the way awesome! But I needed to keep my eyes on the road as the drive to Applecross Inn for lunch is not for the faint-hearted – the reward though is immense. Then the coast road, a visit to a family owned smokehouse, to The Torridon https://www.thetorridon.com for champagne and chocolate tasting plus an exclusive use dining room for dinner.
Day 3 – Torridon back to Auchterarder
East from Torridon, alongside awe inspiring mountains down to Loch Ness – no Nessy sighting that day but another surprise idea – this time using a gin distillery to deliver a tasting with a view! Through Glencoe, which despite being bathed in sunshine still managed to look both magnificent and sinister! Back to the finish for a final rally dinner – perfect!
